"One Life to Live" actor Nathaniel Marston has died at the age of 40, after sustaining injuries from a serious car crash in October. Marston's mother Elizabeth Jackson announced the news on Wednesday.

"My beloved and cherished son, Nathaniel Marston, who was putting up the good fight until last night, was not able to continue due to the traumatic and devastating nature of his injuries," she posted on Facebook, reported People.

"Nathaniel passed away peacefully as I held him in my arms... God ended Nathaniel's pain and suffering at 3:15 today PST in Reno, NV."

The former "One Life to Live" star met with a car accident near Reno on Oct. 30. The critically injured actor was placed on life-support after he broke his shoulder, ribs and five vertebrae in the accident.

According to a preliminary investigation report Marston fell asleep while driving. The actor was driving a 1985 Ford F-150 pickup, which drifted into an opposite lane and overturned multiple times. As Martson was not wearing a seatbelt, he fell out of the vehicle through the windshield.

Jackson noted on Facebook that Marston's body was not responding to the doctor's treatment and that one after another his body functions failed to support his life.

He'd been fighting pneumonia, a heart infection and had an irregular pulse. Had he survived, he would have been on a ventilator machine and would not have been able to speak or walk, she explained.

As for funeral arrangements, Marston's mother noted that a memorial will be held in New York City, Kauai and Gerlach, Nev and that dates for the funeral will be announced soon, reported EOnline.

Marston, best known for his role as Michael McBain on ABC's One Life to Live, also appeared on the TV shows "Blue Bloods," "Castle," and "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit."
