Drama Review 'Road to the Airport' Episode 6

BY HanCinema | Oct 07, 2016 08:06 AM EDT

There's a very great look, near the beginning of this episode, on Do-woo's face. What's he looking at? The reaction on Soo-ah's face as she takes in another good look at scenery. Ever since Annied died this is something that has been missing from Do-woo's life- someone who likes looking at things simply for the sake of looking at things. As an architect Do-woo is a strong appreciator of aesthetic. So it's with a keen sense of irony that he comes to realize no one else in his life pays attention to that stuff.

It wasn't always like this. We find out through flashback that there was once a time when Eun-hee too reliably demonstrated this same sense of perception, and this skill no doubt had a great deal with the old woman obtaining her current professional position. But it's the personal element that really makes these scenes hit home. In flashback Annie is an uncannily bright influence of Eun-hee's life. One that has since disappeared.

Sometimes it almost seems like Hye-won has a point in just wanting to move on. The disproportionate influence Annie has on Do-woo's attention all this time later is troublesome. But then that's the big irony- by refusing to allow the issues revolving Annie to be properly addressed, Hye-won is simply causing everyone's emotional wounds to fester. This makes recovery all the harder, which seems to inevitably push Do-woo into an affair with Soo-ah.

That much seems like an excuse, to be entirely honest, which is how a lot of the emotional issues in"Road to the Airport" get so murky. While Jin-seok hasn't had that much screentime as of late, what little we do see of the man isn't really justification for Soo-ah to cheat on him. Even Hye-won doesn't deserve to be cheated on, because no one deserves that. But it's just...by the episode Do-woo has less and less to hold on to except for investigating the mystery of Annie's death. And that's not very much.

Soo-ah still has Hyo-eun, though, which is the main sticking point of "Road to the Airport". There's almost an element of survivor's guilt there, in that Soo-ah has her daughter and Do-woo does not. But that also means Soo-ah could still lose Hyo-eun. The girl appears to have bounced back from Annie's death, simply by having been given proper opportunity to cry about it and move on to doing normal girl things again. How easily that could change...
