Kim Nam Gil Dishes Out Reasons for Choosing ‘Through the Darkness,’ His Role and More
In an interview held ahead of his Kdrama "Through the Darkness" big premiere, Kim Nam Gil shared why he chose to participate in the series, the kind of character he will portray and more.
Kim Nam Gil Shares Reasons in Participating in 'Through the Darkness'
Kdrama "Through the Darkness" stars Kim Nam Gil as Song Ha Young, a respected member of the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency's Criminal Behavior Analysis team. He is a friend and a colleague to Kook Young Soo, the founder of the team, played by Jin Sun Kyu.
"Through the Darkness" is set in the late 1990s where the title of "criminal profilers" doesn't exist yet. Crimes and murders were on the loose, and the behavioral analysis team look into the hearts of the killers to know more about them.
When asked about the certain reason for choosing the drama, and what sets apart "Through the Darkness" from others, Kim Nam Gil enthusiastically answered, "The charm of the drama is that it's based on a non-fiction book, and we're now creating a masterpiece of a story out of it."

The drama is based on the non-fiction book of the same name, co-written by South Korea's first criminal profiler Kwon Il Young and journalist-turned-author Ko Nam Woo.
"I like how the drama sends the message across that everyone has their own lives yet not an island," the actor continued, "The world is meant for people to work together and interact in harmony while still being responsible for their own lives.

Song Ha Young might not talk much nor express himself as boldly as he can, but he is one of the top detectives in the Seoul Metropolitan Police for his ability to empathize and look right through the criminals.
Kim Nam Gil analyzed his character deeply and described him as "a man who has a sense of responsibility and justice."
Song Ha Young is determined, firm and just who doesn't give up when he starts doing something, making sure he finishes strong until the end.
While preparing for his new acting role, Kim Nam Gil faced certain challenges. He honestly stated, "It's a character I've never played before so I tried my best to immerse myself in Song Ha Young."

"I like the fact that I'm able to portray the first criminal profiler of South Korea. He exists in reality and it's an honor to take on this role," he added.
The new drama is expected to capture Kim Nam Gil's acting ability that will certainly capture viewers' interest and attention.
Moreover, "Through the Darkness" airs for the first time on Friday, January 14 on SBS TV at 9:00 p.m. KST. It will also be available on Viki.
