Bae Suzy Recalls Her Idol Years Through Netflix’s Doona’: ‘I kept my emotions to myself’

Bae Suzy took a trip down memory lane as she graced Cosmopolitan Korea's November 2023 issue.

Talking about her shift from music to acting, the 29-year-old beauty relates this to her upcoming K-drama "Doona."

Bae Suzy Talks About Her Miss A Days, Shift From Music to Acting

As Bae Suzy returns to the small screen, she is set to deliver an amazing yet intriguing character as she takes on the role of Lee Doona, the once popular lead vocalist of a K-pop group who decides to leave the spotlight amid her skyrocketing fame.

During her interview with Cosmopolitan Korea, Bae Suzy recalled her experience starting out as a K-pop member and eventually making a name for herself in the world of acting.

According to the actress, she mentioned that she has a special attachment to her character in Netflix's "Doona."

Although her experience is way different from Lee Doona, Bae Suzy said that she could relate and "was able to understand Doona better than anyone else.

Since both of them started their careers in music, the 29-year-old beauty said that she can still recall her days as an idol.

"It also brought back a lot of memories from when I was an idol," she shared. However, Bae Suzy honestly revealed the differences between her and Lee Doona.

"I was in my early twenties and didn't have the time to feel and express pain like Doona. I kept my emotions to myself. But Doona feels all of her emotions and goes through a hard time to her heart's content," she explained.

Describing her character as someone who has a "vicious side that speaks meanly on purpose," Bae Suzy said that, like everyone else, she wants to be loved.

In addition, the actress also hinted at the possible twists and turns of her character, hoping that viewers will get to see and understand Lee Doona.

Would Bae Suzy Do What Her Character Did in 'Doona'?

One of the pivotal decisions that Lee Doona made was to step away from the spotlight and live away from the public's eye. After leaving her group, she lives in a shared building where she meets her neighbor, college student Lee Won Joon, played by Yang Se Jong.

Their unlikely friendship becomes a safe space for Lee Doona, who sees this as her sanctuary.

When asked if there would be a possibility that she would have taken the same route as Lee Doona and lived her idol life, the actress expressed that she had fun during those times.

"I think I would have lived very well. I enjoyed it more than anyone else! She explained.

As for her shift from music to acting, Bae Suzy said that she "became more confident," especially after taking on the role in "Anna."

Viewers lauded her acting range for delivering amazing performances and taking on a dual role.

"Now, little by little, I feel like I need to trust myself a little more," she said, adding, "After that, I feel very satisfied that people don't just see me as a bright and pretty person."

Bae Suzy's new K-drama "Doona" is scheduled to air on October 20 exclusively on Netflix.
