'Queen of Tears' Accused of Inaccurate Portrayal

tvN's "Queen of Tears," starring Kim Soo Hyun and Kim Ji Won, is on a high rise today with its skyrocketing ratings and back-to-back achievements. However, as it enters its second half, it is unexpectedly receiving backlash.

In the past years, K-dramas and Ki-films have frequently encountered issues related to dialogues or inaccurate depictions of other countries and territories outside South Korea.

Among these countries, Africa is one of the targets often portrayed negatively in Korean movies and dramas. Now, "Queen of Tears" is facing a similar situation.

In "Queen of Tears" Episode 3, Hong Soo Cheol (Kwak Dong Yeon) recalled his stay in Africa. He boldly declared Africa as a place full of "savagery and wilderness," while his father Hong Beom Jun (Jung Jin Young) recounted the story of Soo Cheol hiding in the hotel the whole day because he was afraid of mosquitoes.

  • "They always describe Africa as a place where aliens live, instead of a continent with normal living conditions like anywhere else."
  • "Is the screenwriter really not good at geography?"
  • "K-dramas and K-movies make international viewers feel like Koreans haven't studied geography in school."
  • "It is already 2024, they can't continue doing this, they have to acknowledge their mistake and change the way they talk about Africa. Apologize soon, and let Africa be at peace!"
  • "Another K-drama using names of different countries and territories, please screenwriters or producers, understand the significance and respect of other countries."

The "Queen of Tears" team has not released any statement yet to address the issue.

Before "Queen of Tears," other dramas such as "Kokdu: Season of Deity" and "Shooting Stars" were also heavily criticized for their inaccurate dialogues about Africa.
