A Reality More Tragic Than Reality

There is something that you wouldn't be able to believe even if you saw it with your own two eyes.  A large ferry turned over and started to sink as it was difficult to believe that it had happened in 21st century Korea.  The captain that was supposed to keep the boat until the end had deserted the majority of high school students and escaped the ferry as after the incident, the emergency plans that followed weren't proper hundreds of students who couldn't blossom had died in a tragedy.

In the threat of a situation that happened in a national tragedy, there are fundamental questions being asked about the role of the government and in the sad reality, it conjures an image of the drama "Big Figure" that was broadcast in the fall of 2010 with Suh Hye Rim (played by Go Hyun Jung).  Her husband that was reporting on the war in Afghanistan couldn't be protected by the country and Suh Hye Rim sees her dying as she asks, "Who is Korea for?  Are Congressmen just people that give one or two votes during elections?  Even dogs find their own houses.  Are we not as great as dogs?  Who shall we trust?" and cry.  Then, the congressman gets elected to Congress saying, "In Korea, there should nto be any more citizens that the country cannot keep."  However, it seems as though its tragic that Suh Hye Rim's promise to keep the safety and life of citizens is not true in real life.

It started with a lack of faith in politics, but unlike "Big Figure" materializes the ideal president, "God's Gift" and "Three Days" that are being broadcast are showing the administrative bureaus that are focused on the president's scandals and shows the negative side of politics in reality of the drama.  "God's Gift" is about President Kim Nam Joon (played by Kang Shin Il)'s murder and how he makes a scapegoat to protect his son.  With the repulsion against horrific crimes and the power of law, he executes the sacrificial person and tries to hide the authoritative actions.  Because of this, a certain mother tries hard to save her young daughter who is at risk of death and another younger sibling unjustly takes on the blame of a murder and tries hard to save his older brother who is waiting for his execution.  The prosecution or the poilice are nto working properly and they are all working to save themselves.

Meanwhile, in "Three Days" the president Lee Dong Whee (played by Son Hyun Joo) uses money to go against the powers that try to keep the powers of a democratic country and tries to protect Korea while undergoing a risk of assassination.  He used money as the central element and repeats political and economic scandals yet in an ironic way, tries to be the president that wants a different kind of world.  It is unbelievable that that the system of organized democracy that is a reflection of public opinion is being destroyed by the power of money.  However, one fortunate thing is that the president is regretting his flaws and working on the forefront to protect democracy.

It is impossible to create democracy in the shortest time ever in the reality of Korea's politics and only possible in a drama.  However, as there are unbelievable things in reality, it is dififcult to set aside dramas as mere fiction.  What will we do about the desperateness and the surprise that comes from encountering a reality that is even more difficult to believe than a drama.
