After more than a decade since the first of the “I Know What You Did Last Summer” movies came out, Sony has officially announced of making a reboot of the 90s teen slasher film, which was starred by singer and actress Jennifer Love Hewitt.

Variety claims that the studio has already put director Mike Flanagan (“Oculus”) in charge of the project and that the work is well under way on a new movie. The first film in the franchise came out in 1997 and it was based on the 1973 novel of the same title written by Lois Duncan.

Jennifer Love Hewitt had the title role, with co-stars like Sarah Michelle Gellar, Ryan Phillippe, and Freddie Prinze Jr. The story consists of a very simple plot, where four friends killed a man in a car accident only to find themselves being hunted by a serial killed after they try to cover it up.

Aside from the Scream franchise, “I Know What You Did Last Summer” was also considered as one of the biggest and most successful teen hack-and-slash films of the decade, which quickly went on to receive cult status, which is one of the reasons why Sony intends to bring back the story into focus.

Mike Flanagan later tweeted that he is officially aboard the project. However, he denied that he will be sitting on the director's chair, or even producing the movie. Instead, he claimed that his part resumed to writing the script for the rebooted “I Know What You Did Last Summer” movie.

The very first “I Know What You Did Last Summer” ended up grossing around $125 million globally and had two sequels over the following years. The reboot is expected to show up in theaters sometime in 2016. Its success may not be the same as before, but it should have scare fans rejoice over the teen suspense movie once more.
