While Vitor Belfort's next fight has been postponed due to Chris Weidman's injury, "The Phenom" is now clamoring for an interim title bout as the champion recuperates. "All-American", however, has deemed it senseless.
Vitor Belfort's next fight was originally scheduled for UFC 181 in December, but a hand injury sustained by Weidman during training caused the match-up to be moved to February.
In a report by MMA Fighting, "The Phenom" has clamored for an interim title fight against another middleweight contender as the champion rehabilitates from his injury.
"The belt must be available to be conquered by the best fighter," Belfort said. "I'm in favor of creating an interim title for cases like this, when the champion gets injured more than once, especially in back-to-back injuries, preventing title fights to happen."
The challenger also noted that the postponement of the fight is a lose-lose situation, not only for the fighters, but also for the fans and everyone involved in making it happen.
"In this type of situation, everybody loses - the fans, who want to see an incredible fight, the other athlete, who trains hard for a fight, the promoters and sponsors, who want to make it all happen," Belfort said.
"The Phenom's" statements, however, did not sit well for Chris Weidman. In his recent appearance on The MMA Hour, the champion addressed the issue, noting that Belfort himself was placed on the sidelines because of a failed drug test.
"We were lined up to fight in July," Weidman explained. "And he had to pull out of the fight. And you know why he had to pull out of the fight? He failed a drug test. So this guy is failing drug tests and he has the audacity, he has the balls to start talking junk?"
"He hasn't fought since November," he continued. "So what if he gets the belt? So what happens with that? He just makes no sense. That's the bottom line."
