5 Seconds of Summer member Ashton Irwin was just minutes away from potentially dying before he was rushed to the hospital for an appendectomy.

Last month, Irwin started feeling unwell and brought himself to the hospital where the doctor told him he could have been minutes away from dying had he not had himself checked, according to Mirror.

"If I went on a plane it would've burst - and I was meant to get on a plane that day," Irwin explained.

The bands spokesperson also released an official statement at that time and said, "Ashton Irwin from 5 Seconds of Summer was admitted to a hospital in Sydney with appendicitis yesterday and has subsequently had an operation to remove his appendix," Heat World reported.

At that time, the Australian band was supposed to perform at the Teen Choice Awards in London, alongside Ariana Grande, Ella Henderson and The Vamps, but pulled out the last minute.

In an interview with The Sun, Irwin teased that he wished he could have brought home his appendix as a souvenir.

"It was taken out but they wouldn't let me keep it. You can't do that anymore."

Also at the time of his surgery, Irwin tweeted a random realization and wrote, "You know when ya think you have a normal belly button... And then you have surgery and your belly button is now but ugly."

Meanwhile, everything is back to normal for the band members of 5 Seconds of Summer namely, Michael Clifford, Luke Hemmings, Calum Hood and Irwin.

On Sunday, the Aussie group was honored at the American Music Awards 2014 held at the Nokia Theater in Los Angeles, California, where they received the New Artist of the Year recognition, Mail Online noted.

"Thank you to our fans. This really shows a little band from Sydney can do great things," Irwin said.
