“Ode to My Father” led the Korean box office during the holiday weekend, drawing attention back to the potential of domestic films. The CJ Entertainment film has led the box office for the past two weekends, helping to drive the American fantasy film “The Hobbit” into fourth place in the Korean market.

According to statistics published by the Korean Film Council, “Ode to My Father” grossed $3.9 million on Christmas Day and led the weekend box office on December 26-28, with more than 37 percent of the viewership.

The Hollywood Reporter noted the success of “Ode to My Father” in a December 29 article titled “South Korea Box Office: Local Films Dominate, Hobbit Slips To Fourth Spot.”

Korea’s domestic film market was revitalized in 2014, with movies like “The Admiral: Roaring Currents” following the success of the 2013 release “Miracle in Cell Number 7.” “Ode to My Father” is the latest example of a film whose success is generating attention from film critics throughout the world.

Directed by JK Youn, “Ode to My Father” is a family film which traverses the hardships of the Korean war to modern times. The film stars seasoned actor Hwang Jung Min (New World) opposite Kim Yunjin of the American TV series “Lost.”

The star-studded cast also includes TVXQ’s Yunho in the cameo role of Nam Jin.

“Ode to My Father” will open in select theaters in the United States and Canada on January 9.
