K-Drama Fan Story: How Chelsea Lynde Fell In Love With K-Dramas

Chelsea Lynde first heard about k-dramas while recovering from her maid of honor duties for a friend's wedding. It was a busy week of a parties and rehearsal dinners. A friend suggested she check out a Korean drama (or two) while she rested. She fell in love with k-dramas and before long was writing about them.

"I had no clue what she was talking about and didn't exactly want to try something in a foreign language," said Lynde. "But I decided to be adventurous and started "Flower Boy Next Door." It was love from the first episode."

She was drawn to the humor in k-dramas and fell head over heels for the love triangle theme.

"Even though I've become a professional at predicting which guy is going to win out in the end, I still fall for the triangle plot," said Lynde. "It never gets old. Then there's the bromances, the hugs from behind, the maybe-we're-really-siblings-and-can't-be-together themes. It's just all so good."

Since she was first introduced to k-dramas, she has explored a few genres, but Her favorite drama is "Boys Over Flowers," which she calls "simply the best" and her favorite actor is Lee Min Ho.

"You're Beautiful" is the one that has made me laugh the hardest," she said. "So if I could sneak into that drama somehow, I'd take the opportunity. I could probably rival Park Shin Hye on causing klutzy catastrophes. Okay, maybe not. She was the queen of klutz and charm in that one."

Loving k-dramas led Lynde to wanting to write about them. She was curious about her favorite stars so she began researching them, a process she describes as a "treasure hunt." The result was a series of e-books such as "What Is Your Lee Min Ho IQ?" and "What Is Your Kim Soo Hyun IQ?" She offers the Lee Min Ho book for free.

"I constantly find myself looking up facts about this Korean actor or that Korean actress. I like to know their backstory and what they're like in real life. Last spring I stumbled across someone else putting together trivia books and got the wild thought, 'Hey, I could do that, too!' Not only did I enjoy the process myself, but others can take the quizzes and have the fun of finding out random facts about their favorite actors, too."

Lynde is the 26-year-old mom of a four-year-old son but she also finds time to write contemporary romances. She says that watching k-dramas has helped her romance writing.

"All I've gleaned from k-drama greatly influences my stories," says Lynde. "In fact, k-drama is what convinced me to go the romance route. I've also written a handful of humor books and, of course, the trivia books."
