When Male K-Drama Characters Kiss

In the February 18 episode of “Kill Me, Heal Me” the drama’s lead actor Ji Sung kisses the very unwilling character Oh Ri On, played by Park Seo Joon.

Ji Sung’s character Cha Do Hyun has many personalities and on that occasion, a teenage girl personality named Ahn Yo Na got the upper hand. She develops an instant crush on her “oppa,” played by Park, and contrives to kiss him. The terrifying effect of the sudden personality change on Park Seo Yoon makes for a very funny scene.

It is rare that male k-drama leads kiss and when it does happen it is usually meant to be comic.

In “Secret Garden” Hyun Bin locks lips with his character’s cousin, played by Yoon Sang Hyun. But that happens because he is also not in possession of his own body. Ga Il Rim, the character played by Ha Ji Won, switches bodies with Hyun Bin’s character. And Gil Ra Im has a longstanding crush on the Hallyu star Oska, played by Yoon Sang Hyun. It’s a scene that many people have parodied, including Big Bang’s Seungri and T.O.P. In the same parody T.O.P. kisses G-dragon in a recreation of the drama’s cappuccino foam kiss.

The cable hit “Reply 1994” also saw two male stars pucker up only this time it was part of a drunken game.

B1A4’s Baro spoke about the scene in which he kisses co-star Jung Woo when he was interviewed on the Shindong Shim Shim Ta Pa radio show. The ‘Reply 1994” kiss took place during a dare game played by students in a dormitory. Baro said it went well.

“There were no NGs during the filming of the kissing scene. We got the okay on the first try.”

But then Baro made the show’s crew and listeners laugh.
“However, Jung Woo wanted to practice ten times,” he said.

Of course there are quite a few k-drama plots that feature a male character kissing or wanting to kiss what he is convinced is another male character. But it’s really a girl in disguise. There are so many girls disguised as boys in k-dramas it’s easy to get confused.

Jang Geun Suk could not avoid kissing Park Shin Hye in “You’re Beautiful” when she fell on him, while disguised as a boy. Gong Yoo decides to go ahead and kiss Yoon Eun Hye even though he thinks she is a boy. He likes her so much that he has decided it doesn’t matter.
