Jun Hyung’s Idol Acting Skills Are Impressive in “Monstar”

"Monstar," the new drama starring idol singer Yong Jun Hyung, is about the excitement of making musical dreams come true and the power of music to heal emotional scars.

Yong Jun Hyung, a rapper with the boy band Beast, will play Yoon Seol Chan, a singer in a fictional band called Men in Black. His past negative experiences have made him, cold, cynical, and prone to temper tantrums. His temper gets him in trouble so many times that his management company sends him back to high school, where he has to behave or else.

He's a star but he's also a monster, so that makes him a "monstar," and that's not likely to make him popular.

Meanwhile, the audition craze has inspired students at his new high school to try for their own dreams of musical superstardom. Yoon naturally joins the high school band but that doesn't necessarily mean he will get star treatment. Will he be a team player and help his fellow students achieve their dreams? Or will he make trouble at his new school and spoil their chances of making it big?

Finding out should be musical fun.

Who better to portray the excitement and challenges faced by an idol singer than a real idol singer? That's what MNET producers thought when they decided that Jun Hyung was the best fit for the role. Since he composes music and writes lyrics, he has many similarities with the drama's character.

"This is the rapper's very first attempt in acting, but you can look forward to his great passion," said an MNET spokesperson.

Rehearsals are underway and so far, the production crew is impressed. The idol singer's acting skills were so outstanding on the set that even the director couldn't stop praising him.

The on-set atmosphere is friendly and everyone in the drama is working hard. Production director Yoon Hyun Gi said that even when the actors are not filming, they don't choose to rest.

"They either practice their singing or play music instruments. They work very hard for both acting and music at the same time, putting themselves wholly into the shoot," said Yoon Hyun Gi.

The cast for the 12-episode drama also includes Ha Yeon Soo, who appeared in the popular film, "Very Ordinary Couple." She will play student Min Se Yi.  Kang Ha Neul, who appeared in the film, "You're My Pet," and was Min Hyun Jae in "To The Beautiful You," will play Jung Sun Woo.

Kim Won Seok of "Sungkyunkwan Scandal" will direct and writer Jung Yoon Jung of "Arang and the Magistrate" will deliver the screenplay.

So far the May drama has started off on a good note.
