Kdrama Romances With An Age Gap

How important is a few years age difference when it comes to romance? It's apparently nothing that can't be overcome in four kdramas that hilariously explore romantic relationships between older women and younger men.

In "Flower Boy Ramen Shop," Yang Eun Bi, 25, is shocked to find out the guy she just asked for a date is actually a 19-year-old high school student and not a 31-year-old college student. And he is not just younger than her but quite immature for his age. As she is technically his teacher, she tries to avoid him. But fate has other plans. They were meant to be together and when he realizes that he is in love with her, he grows up in a hurry.

In the drama "Big," Gil Da Ran, a substitute teacher, did not mean to fall for the 18-year-old transfer student Kang Kyung Joon but he has magically been transported into the body of her fiancée Seo Yoon Jae. Is that technically dating a younger man when his soul is trapped in the body of your 30-year-old boyfriend? And who is Gil Da Ran really in love with? These are "Big" questions that don't get resolved until the last episode.

In "I Do, I Do," successful shoe designer Hwang Ji Ahn is in her late 30s and has pretty much given up on love. Then she has a one-night stand with Tae Kang, a young shoe counterfeiter and finds she is expecting. The results of this encounter throw her carefully ordered world into turmoil. If she thinks critically, having anything to do with Tae Kang is a bad idea, but they are about to have a baby, and through a weird twist of kdrama fate, they work together. They are seriously mismatched in every way and yet they care for each other. Can they overcome all the obstacles that confront them? They do and yet I'm not sure they would get to "I Do" in real life.

In "The Woman Who Still Wants To Marry," journalist Shin Yong has already broken up with someone her own age, a man who did not understand how she could put her career before a relationship. But then at 35, she meets Min Jae, an indie musician who is ten years her junior. He has no problems with her having a career but she has a problem with dating someone so much younger, someone whose mother is only ten years older than her. This couple seems the best matched of all in these dramas as they share so many interests. Shin Young seems young, while Min Jae seems mature for his age.

What are the real-life odds for success in such relationships? Do you see them lasting or leading to an altar? Let us know.
