The MBC drama "When a Man Falls in Love" features a story that reminds us of all the dramatic romance novels we used to read. It features cheesy lines like, "Don't do anything to your hair. You're pretty just the way you are" and "I'm like a flower petal when you get to know me." Regardless of the immature romance, there is something so addicting about this drama.
Of all the serious romantic dramas of the season, "When a Man Falls in Love" has the strongest foundation. It contains a detailed story line as well as the detailed portrayal of the characters'' emotions.
Characters in this drama experience a lonely type of love. It features a theme that constantly shows each character's unreturned love.
Koo Yong Gap (Lee Chang Hoon) is in love with Baek Sung Joo (Chae Jung Ahn) who used to be the ex-boss's girlfriend, while she is in love with Han Tae Sang (Song Seung Hun). Even though Baek Sung Joo throws herself at Han Tae Sang, he pours his heart out to Seo Mi Do (Shin Se Kyung), whom he met when she tried to sacrifice herself for her father's debt. However, Seo Mi Do cannot truly find herself opening up to Han Tae Sang. The only person who saw the real Seo Mi Do was Lee Jae Hee (Yeon Woo Jin) but she pushes him away after concluding Han Tae Sang will bring her more comfort in the future.
Seo Mi Do acts like Han Tae Sang has all of her heart but still acts like there is a part of her that he cannot get through. It is as if she is toying with him. Meanwhile, Han Tae Sang had always toyed around with Baek Sung Joo in a way. Sometimes acting like he will come around but at others, completely ignoring her. However, Baek Sung Joo does the same thing to Koo Yong Gap. She tries to use him acting like he can have her but in reality, she has no interest in ever letting him in. Koo Yong Gap tells Baek Sung Joo, "What you're doing to me right now reminds me of what Han Tae Sang is doing to you."
Even though Seo Mi Do has not realized it yet, the fact that she did accept the couple ring from Han Tae Sang may mean that she is slowly starting to return his love without even realizing it. Baek Sung Joo may be the only one who has figured out about the love triangle that involves Hang Tae Sang, Seo Mi Do and Lee Jae Hee. How will she take advantage of this knowledge to get what she wants?
