'Reply 1988' Faces Criticism For Ryu Hye Young's Smoking Scene

BY Adrienne Stanley

A recent episode of "Reply 1988" is facing criticism for a smoking scene involving actress Ryu Hye Young.

According to a report published by OSEN on December 9, the Korea Communications Committee issued advisories in regards to a scene from the November 21 episode of the tvN family drama.

"It was a smoking scene that expressed and revealed the assertive character, who had a strong involvement in the [student] demonstrations," said a representative for the production team, in a quote cited by OSEN. "[It was] a spirited look at female students [Ryu Hye Young]."

The 24-year-old actress portrays Sung Bo Ra, a bright college co-ed at Seoul University, who becomes increasingly embroiled in the contentious student protest movement of the late '80s.

During the scene that has been questioned by the Korea Communications Committee, Bo Ra secretly blows cigarette smoke out her bedroom window, in an attempt to conceal her burgeoning habit.

According to the report, the committee cited the scene as having the potential to encourage young people to try smoking.

While the initial findings of the communications committee were not harsh, OSEN explained that the inquiry could lead to administrative guidance or court sanctions.

"In the future, we will use careful consideration," said the production spokesperson.

Through its incorporation of sensitive topics like the storyline centered on Bo Ra and the budding love lines of her sister, Sung Deok Sun (Girl's Day Hyeri), "Reply 1988" continues to follow in the footsteps of its predecessors by racking up record ratings.

The December 5 broadcast of the cable drama titled "Memory," recorded its highest ratings to date, as 13.4 subscribers tuned in for the episode.

Meanwhile, "Reply 1988" continues its 20 episode run through January 16, 2016. The series airs on Fridays and Saturdays at 7:50 p.m. KST.
