Masters Of Sex Season 2: Why Did Lizzy Caplan Start Acting? Talks Rejection And How Viriginia Johnson Came “Right In The Nick Of Time”

Lizzy Caplan is currently enjoying her first leading role as sex pioneer Virginia Johnson in 'Masters Of Sex' season 2. Landing the role, however, didn't come to her as easily as people would expect.

"Aiming for the stars becomes a bit soul-crushing after you're told 'no' for the thousandth time," Caplan told Rolling Stone in an interview. "I didn't want to be continually rejected. I was right at the doorway of believing I couldn't do anything else when this came around. It was right in the nick of time."

Prior to her role as Virginia Johnson, the 32-year-old actress had to go through sidekick roles and face harsh rejections before finally being taken seriously in 'Masters Of Sex.'

The Showtime drama isn't her first foray into getting naked into the camera either. People still remember her psychedelic sex scene in 'True Blood' in 2008. She remembers getting asked to do the very first nude scene in her career on her second day of filming.

"I walked into my dressing room, and where your clothes are hanging on a rack was just one pair of underwear," she shared.

Despite her struggle, Caplan still pushed on with her dream, but why did she start acting in the first place?

According to Rolling Stone, the actress started thinking about acting after her mother died when she was still 13 years old.

"Strangely, from that age on I thought the only reason why I could even attempt to be an actress was because this horrible thing happened to me," the Emmy nominated actress confessed. "Like something dark and terrible had to happen in order to earn your stripes as a human being and be able to be an actress. I don't know where I got that from."

According to Bio, Caplan's Emmy nomination for her role in the Showtime series came as "a total and utter surprise."

She is still very grateful for landing her current role, adding, "I don't remember a time before Virginia Johnson."

Caplan is currently starring with Michael Sheen (Dr. William Masters) in Showtime's 'Masters Of Sex' season 2.
