'Mask' Premiered With Top Ratings And Strong Acting

BY Adrienne Stanley

"Mask" debuted with a stellar episode on May 27. According to ratings reported by Nielsen Media Research Korea, "Mask" recorded 7.5 percent of viewers, topping the other Wednesday dramas.

The series airs within the time slot previously occupied by "The Girl Who Sees Smells" and benefits from the departure of rating juggernaut, "Unkind Women."

"Mask" stars Soo Ae (Queen of Ambition) as Byeon Ji Sook, a young retail worker, who is forced to take on the identity of a wealthy heir. Ji Sook is the doppelganger of Seo Eun Ha, a cold city woman, who is met with dire circumstances. Due to her appearance, Ji Sook assumes the identity of Eun Ha. Joo Ji Hoon portrays Choi Min Woo, a hardened conglomerate heir. Ji Sook and Min Woo embark upon a strange and complicated relationship.

Screenwriter Choi Ho Chul, who was the recipient of the  2012 Excellence Award for "Secret Love," incorporates a similar level of gripping melodrama into "Mask."

The first episode literally kicks off with a cliffhanger. Ji Sook is involved in a dreadful car accident, which leaves her suspended on a cliff before she plunges to the depths of choppy waters. The initial scenes are compelling, providing viewers with the motivation to continue watching the program.

"Mask" was followed by the Hong Sisters' series, "Warm and Cozy." The romance has started to heat up in the drama, as Baek Gun Woo (Yoo Yeon Seok) and Lee Jung Joo (Kang Sora) draw closer to one another. "Warm and Cozy" recorded 7.0 percent.

The KBS series "Masked Prosecutor" placed last with 5.3 percent. "Masked Prosecutor" stars Joo Sang Wook as Ha Dae Cheol, a man who became a prosecutor in order to avenge his father. When he is unable to prosecute criminals within the penal system, he turns towards his high-school wrestling background and delivers justice as a vigilante.
