When it comes to romantic K-Dramas, happy endings are a must after an eight-week journey. Nothing satisfies an avid viewer more than a well-deserved happy ever after.

However, many new releases tend to stay away from the cliches, surprising viewers with its rather melancholic conclusions. Here are four of them.

'Red Balloon'

In the recently concluded drama "Red Balloon," Seo Ji Hye and Lee Sang Woo reaped what they sowed.

Since the beginning, their relationship was already frowned upon due to its cheating nature. While some fans rooted for them, viewers have stood their ground and criticized their characters.

In the end, Seo Ji Hye and Lee Sang Woo didn't end up together, and fans ironically celebrated the former's suffering.

'Love Alarm'

Kim So Hyun's decision at the end of the drama "Love Alarm" left viewers with mixed emotions.

After being with Song Kang through thick and thin, she still chose to be with Jung Ga Ram, which angered avid fans. In fact, the lead couple has gained massive following around the world over the course of the drama.

Unfortunately, Kim So Hyun wasn't entirely transparent about her feelings for the two leading men, which also confused the viewers.

Majority believes that Song Kang deserved a better ending with someone while others claim that the three should have focused on themselves first and find their purposes in life.

'Big Mouse'

No cheating nor unrequited feelings, Yoona and Lee Jong Suk made thousands of viewers weep in their action series "Big Mouse"!

Though it's not originally centered on romance, the chemistry with the childhood best friends who married one another was through the roof.

What shattered the public's hearts was when Lee Jong Suk bid his final goodbye to Yoona, whose character suffered from cancer.

During its finale, fans were enraged with the ending. However, "Big Mouse" still remains as one of the best works of 2022.

'Twenty Five, Twenty One'

Kim Tae Ri and Nam Joo Hyuk's "Twenty Five, Twenty One" is perhaps the most controversial work in the past years after dominating the entire Hallyu scene, and then breaking millions of hearts.

The work enjoyed massive success as the drama gained a cult following all over Asia. The chemistry between the lead stars was lauded by K-Drama fans.

It's also the most realistic work as the narrative revolves around the characters' emotions and growth as they grow older together and apart. The effects of many external factors were also effectively shown in the series.

Although the breakup was agreed upon by both parties, fans still couldn't accept that their favorite couple didn't end up together even a year later.
