"Call Me Maybe" artist Carly Rae Jepsen has been chosen to be the new girl with the glass slipper in "Rodgers & Hammerstein's Cinderella" on Broadway.
Jepsen, who became infamous for her 2012 "Call Me Maybe" hit, will take a break from the concert stage to make her theater stage debut on Broadway next year. This is according to an announcement made by the show's producers on Sunday (Dec 29th).
Jepsen is taking the place of Broadway actress Laura Osnes, who will end her single year long run in January.
Jepsen will start her 12-week run as Cinderella on February 4th. She will be accompanying Fran Drescher, the new cruel stepmother that is also making her Broadway debut.
Though Jepsen is known for her pop music, she always had aspirations of performing on Broadway.
During high school in British Columbia, Jepsen acted in productions of "Annie," "Grease," and "The Wiz." After high school she went to the Canadian College of Performing Arts.
“It was essentially musical theater training with studies in singing, dancing and acting,” she said in an email sent to the New York Times. "My favorite part of the school year was our trip to New York, where we met Broadway performers and toured the theaters.” She cited her love of Cinderella’s story as a reason for choosing this particular production as her Broadway debut. “It’s so hopeful and inspiring,” she said. “I’ve always been one to believe in the impossible, so I relate to her character completely.”
Besides playing Cinderalla next year, we can also expect Jepsen to release another album.
