UFC 173 main event Weidman vs Machida has been cancelled due to an injury Chris Weidman had during one of his training sessions. Should Lyoto Machida fight Alexander Gustafsson in a superfight?
After removing Vitor Belfort from his promised title fight due to the ban on Tesosterone Replacement Therapy, the UFC put in Lyoto Machida to fight UFC Middleweight champion Chris Weidman.
All was well with UFC 173, until news hit today that, Weidman, is set to go under surgery for a knee injury and cannot compete.
Here's the official statement of the UFC regarding the incident:
"The Ultimate Fighting Championship announced today that middleweight champion Chris Weidman has been forced to withdraw from his scheduled title defense against Lyoto Machida on May 24. Weidman suffered a knee injury that will require minor surgery and his bout with Machida has been rescheduled for Saturday, July 5. A new main event for UFC 173 on May 24 will be announced in the days to come."
Who should Machida face next? Some fans are suggesting the much awaited fight between Lyoto Machida and Alexander Gustafsson.
While they are fighting in different weight classes, Machida can easily go back to 205 for one fight with Alexander Gustafsson and Machida has already challenged Gustafsson in the past
Seeing as this will be a super fight and Machida will fight at a higher weight class his stock will grow should he manage to beat Alexander Gustafsson and arguably he is the better striker between the two.
But what is your opinion on the fight? Who should Lyoto Machida fight as a replacement? Is a Gustafsson fight possible? Sound off in the comments below!
