Many of Wednesday night's dramas and entertainment shows were cancelled due to a tragic event that sent shock waves through Korea. It has been called one of South Korea's worst peacetime disasters and the nation's biggest maritime disaster.

The incident happened when a ferry traveling its bi-weekly route from Incheon to Jeju Island capsized on April 16. Of the 475 passengers, more than 300 were students from Danwon High School in Ansan. The students were on a class trip to Jeju Island. So far, 179 passengers have been rescued. Nine passengers are confirmed dead; among those were five students. Underwater rescue teams are still searching for missing  passengers.

Out of respect for this terrible tragedy and in sympathy for those affected by it, Korean broadcasting stations cancelled Wednesday night's showing of many programs, including the top dramas "Three Days," Cunning Single Lady" and "Golden Cross." Other entertainment shows were also cancelled.

Many actors also cancelled promotional events scheduled for that day. Jo In Sung was due to appear at a promotional event but it was canceled, as the event seemed inappropriate when the nation was in mourning. Jun Ji Hyun's appearance at a promotional event for Whistler Korea was also postponed.

Although some shows resumed airing on Thursday, the schedule was altered as news coverage of the rescue efforts filled broadcasting time slots.

KBS canceled its Thursday night variety show "Happy Together," instead showing an episode of the daily drama "Sky Angel." The daily drama "Love Rides the Song" was also cancelled but the third episode of "Golden Cross" was shown. The last two episodes of the MBC comedy "Cunning Single Lady" were shown together, on Thursday ending the show's run.

SBS canceled its variety show "Hundred Year Guest - Jagiya" but there was no word on whether one or more episodes of "Three Days" would be shown.

The cable station tvN canceled the talk show "Taxi" and the daily comedy "Potato Star."

Many actors offered their condolences and prayers for the victims and their families.

On Twitter, Song Seung Hoon wrote, "I am watching the news and praying with all my heart but it's so devastating. I mourn for the sinking of the ship and I pray the missing victims are all safe."

Actor and comedian Park Hwi Soon also tweeted about the tragedy.

"I really hope everyone is safe," he wrote. "All your families are worried and I am so heartbroken. I wish for a miracle."
