It was a tight match between two strong opponents. Federer holds the most number of Wimbledon championships won while Djokovic has won seven Grand Slam singles titles and has held the No. 1 spot in the ATP rankings for a total of 101 weeks.
That is why the Wimbledon finals match is such a great watch as both finalists were on their toes trying their best to win over the other.
But it wasn't a good day for the former Wimbledon champion Roger Federer as he succumbs to his defeat over a jubilant Djokovic. Serbia's Djokovic held on for a 6-7 (7), 6-4, 7-6 (4), 5-7, 6-4 victory on an almost 4 hour match which led Djokovic to his second Wimbledon championship while defeating Switzerland's Federer.
According to Djokovic "'I could have easily lost my concentration in the fifth and just handed him the win. But I didn't, and that's why this win has a special importance to me, mentally. I managed to not just win against my opponent, but win against myself, as well, and find that inner strength."
During the post-match ceremony, Djokovic directly talked to Federer and said "I respect your career and everything you have done. And thank you for letting me win today."
Federer had a good game ahead of him during his match against the Serbian. When asked about his opponent he said "Novak deserved it at the end, clearly, but it was extremely close."
Djokovic did not have a strong game at start. Federer hit back on his game in the fourth set and won five straight games which led to a deciding set. On this the Serbian said "That's why this victory meant so much to me. First of all, because it was against a great rival on his court and also considering the fact that I had lost three out of [his past] four grand slam finals."
When asked about his poor run when he had lost five of his past six grand slam finals he answered "I would be lying if I said it was not in my mind. Of course it started playing with my confidence and I had some doubts. Of course people told me things, trying to help, but I managed to overcome this and I was the one to find a way. Today was a huge test, a mental challenge. We pushed each other to the limit and I could not drop concentration throughout the whole match to win it. That's why it was extra special."
