Channing Frye has opted out of his contract from the Phoenix Suns. He chose to use his final year termination contract worth 6.8 million dollars and sign up with the Orlando Magic for a 32 million dollar contract worth four years. This is a big step for the forward on his career as he has now chosen to be a free agent.
Frye stands 6 ft 11 in and 245 lb. He was selected 8th overall by the New York Knicks in the 2005 NBA Draft and was the first college senior to be selected in that draft. He was named the Rookie of the Month for November 2005 along with the New Orleans Hornets' Chris Paul.
He started his NBA career playing for the New York Knicks for two seasons after which he moved on to the Portland Trail Blazers for another two years before staying with the Phoenix Suns for a long four years.
Frye was also selected as 2005-2006 T Mobile NBA All-Rookie First Team, and finished fifth in points (45) behind Chris Paul (58), Charlie Villanueva (56), Andrew Bogut (55), and Deron Williams (46).
The 31 year old forward was not able to join his former team during the 2012-13 seasons as he was treated for an enlargement of the heart but was able to play in the NBA last season for 82 games. He averaged 11.1 points and 5.1 rebounds per game.
Magic's general manager Rob Hennigan has been choosing younger on the past three drafts. He has said that he wanted to balance out his team with both young players and mix them with veterans in order to rebuild his team. Currently, Magic has 11 players on their list with three years or less experience.
The New York native is best known for his long range shooting which makes 37 percent of his 432 three-point attempts last season.
If the deal pushes through, he will be signing his contract on July 10 under the NBA free agency rules. With Frye on the team, the Magic can expect consistent scoring and a expert presence that can complement the teams youthful vigor. Indeed, NBA Fans and Magic fans alike will be looking forward to the new addition to the team.
