Brazil World Cup 2014 News: A Closer Look At Netherlands' Ron Vlaar Missed Penalty; Is This A Goal, or An Almost Goal?

Tags

A penalty kick is crucial to every match, especially for the Netherlands, who fell short against Argentina's goals during their semi finals.

Ron Vlaar had a very special penalty kick.

First of all, Vlaar is a good defender, but not a striker, which may explain why his kick was so easily blocked by the Argentina goalie Sergio Romero. It was believed that he accepted the responsibility of the penalty when two of his teammates refused.

However, footage from the Internet are surafcacing that shows that his shot may have been a goal... technically. Vlaar moved back five paces, and then did his best to hit the ball to the goal, but was blocked by Romero flawlessly.

However, while the goalie was celebrating his save, a bit of mixed up physics came to play. Or magic. Or both.

The ball rolled back the goal, only to stop exactly at the goal line.

With this, Vlaar is literally just millimetres away from not only a goal, but a piece of history!

Here is a footage of the magical almost goal:

So, what do you think of Vlaar's penalty shot? Can you consider that a goal?

But, the story, does not end there, as from another angle, the Dutch defender may have touched the ball unintentionally, so that makes the goal null. If it was a goal.

According to this clip, it shows that Vlaar may or may not have touched the ball and brushed it across his shoulders.

Nonetheless, it can be decided with the spin and trajectory of the ball.

Here is the footage of the said penalty kick, from another angle:

Now, the Netherlands will have to face Brazil in their third place match.
