Rashard Lewis just recently signed a one-year contract paying the veteran's minimum under the Dallas Mavericks. But when Lewis had his physical test done for the Mavericks, it was there that he found out that he would need to under a knee surgery on his right knee.
Lewis' agent Colin Bryant is still not sure as to how long will Lewis need to recuperate from the surgery or if Mavericks will void Lewis' contract. According to him "Rashard discovered he needs a medical procedure on his right knee to ensure he functions at a high level this season. We look forward to [Lewis] getting this behind him as soon as possible so he can continue his stellar NBA career."
Dallas Mavericks spokesperson refused to give out any comments on the matter.
For two years, Lewis was under the Miami Heat where he was part of the team when they won one of their championships. He averaged 4.5 points and 1.8 rebounds in 16.2 minutes per game last season.
This is not the first time that the Mavericks has had the same situation. Last summer, Devin Harris was signed to the team in a three year $9 million contract before his injury was found out. Ultimately, Dallas signed Harris to a one year minimum salary deal and had resigned him to a long term contract this year.
The difference between Harris' and Lewis situation is that Harris has not signed his contract yet that time while Lewis already had.
Lewis' agent implies the Mavericks will keep his client, but if they can still invalidate the contract, the window won't be open much longer.

He stayed with Seattle for nine seasons before jumping ship to the Orlando Magic where he was signed with a six-year sign-and-trade deal worth $118 million.
