King Kong Skull Island Plot

"King Kong: Skull Island" plot takes place in 1970's Detroit, a contrast to popular adaptations. A cast member confirms the new movie will take a different tack in the story arc.

J.K. Simmons teased a snippet on the "King Kong: Skull Island" plot in an interview during the Golden Globes; his comment was enough to give a good idea of where and when the 2017 adaptation is set. It looks like they're scrapping the iconic, often parodied scene with the Empire State Building this time.

Few details are revealed on "King Kong: Skull Island," apart from a few confirmed cast members and a release date (March 10, 2017). The biggest reveal yet was teased (or leaked?) by one Simmons, though, who's confirmed a role in the movie. MTV News managed to squeeze the info from him on the Golden Globes red carpet.

"Honestly when it first came to my attention, 'there's interest in you for a new King Kong', I thought, 'okay, why?' But I met with Jordan Vogt-Roberts, who's going to be directing it, and John Gatins, who's going to be writing - and Tom [Hiddleston]... Jordan was just so passionate and so smart and there's such an interesting new take on it. And, it's set in Detroit in 1971, which is where I grew up, and we're going to shoot in Detroit during baseball season and I'll be able to go to Tigers games."

The location and time period for the "King Kong: Skull Island" plot were dropped, making it the second adaptation set in the 70's (the first was launched 1976). Other films climaxed in New York, set in Depression Era 1930's.

The 2017 film is expected to breathe new life into the franchise, with a different tack on the storyline and a notable ensemble: J.K. Simmons and Tom Hiddleston. An appearance for Michael Keaton is still in the works (screenrant.com).
