An Unhappy End To A Kdrama Marriage

The divorce proceedings of actor Ryu Shi Won have gone beyond messy. The prosecution has proposed an eight-month prison sentence for the actor who is accused of tracking, threatening and assaulting his wife.

Ryu Shi Won and Jo Soo In married in 2010 and they have a young daughter. Jo filed for divorce two years later, claiming to have 150 audio recordings of the actor hitting and threatening her.

She began recording their conversations in May 2011, when the actor attached a GPS tracking device to her car, so that he could know where she was going. When she spoke to him about it, he became hostile.

According to one of the recordings, she says he threatened her, saying, "I'll kill you. I know a lot of bad people. Wherever you go, whatever you do, I can get a picture of you. I'm someone you should be scared of."

A month after that conversation he attached a tracking device to her cell phone.  Ryu did not deny tracking his wife's car or phone but claims he did it for her own good.

"I only did it for the safety of my wife and young daughter," said the actor turned singer.

Jo also claimed to have evidence of him physically assaulting her, citing one instance when he slapped her face.

In a statement read by his lawyer, the actor denied ever being physically violent with his wife.

"I never slapped my wife," he said. "And although I may have spoken harshly to her, it was merely a verbal fight and there was no physical violence."

Although he admits he did not try hard enough in their marriage, he calls his wife's charges fraudulent. And he says his primary interest now is his daughter's welfare and what she will think of him.

"I no longer have any interest in the entertainment industry," said Ryu. "I am willing to do anything for my daughter. I don't want her to see me as the father who did the things I am accused of doing."

He also apologized to his fans.

"I am sorry it ended up this way," said Ryu. "I honestly don't really have anything else to say. For me, my family and daughter are everything. As a parent, I need to show my daughter that I am trying to protect the family."

Ryu Shi Won is a successful singer who has released more than a dozen albums and most recently starred in the drama "Goodbye Dear Wife." The next round of the divorce trial will take place in Sept.
