"Star Wars" has always been the domain of geeky boys, but director JJ Abrams revealed that with "The Force Awakens," he's aiming to reach out to the female audience as well.

In an interview with Good Morning America, he said that they have been conscious about how they are going to present the characters for "Star Wars: The Force Awakens."

"Star Wars was always a boys' thing and a movie that dads take their sons to, and though that's still very much the case, I was really hoping this could be a movie that mothers could take their daughters to as well," he said.

With "The Force Awakens," JJ Abrams said that he wanted the audience, especially the young ones, to feel what he felt when he was till a kid and seeing "Star Wars" characters for the first time.

"I'm looking forward to kids seeing this movie and seeing themselves in it and seeing that they're capable of doing things that they never imagined possible," the director added. "What I hope more than anything is that they see a movie that tells them that life is full of sort of unlimited possibility that there's a sense of incredible-to use a George Lucas term, 'hope,'-in the world, and that they feel better when they leave than when they got in there."

"Star Wars: The Force Awakens will have a worldwide release of Dec. 18, 2015.

JJ Abrams said that it was a long journey from the time it was announced that he's going to helm "Star Wars: The Force Awakens," to the major characters like Han Solo, Carrie Fisher and Luke Skywalker

agreeing to be part of the latest film.

"It feels like it's been a long gestation period. I'm very much looking forward to the movie being out in the world," the director said.
