Speculation earlier came on August 19 when actor Park Geun-hyung made remarks during a press conference for the play Waiting for Godot at Yes Stage in Jongno-gu, Seoul.

Park explained, "I tried to visit you several times, but you were reluctant, so I couldn't meet you in person. I've heard from other people, and it doesn't seem like a good situation."

The comments raised worries among the public and fans. Lee's agency later issued a formal statement detailing the health of the actor.

According to an agency official, "Mr. Lee Soon-jae is currently undergoing rehabilitation because he has no strength in his legs, but there are no other problems. He eats well and speaks comfortably."

The official also clarified why he was prevented from receiving visits from acquaintances and co-workers. "Since he was wearing a patient gown, we politely declined the request from those who wanted to see him, as he was an actor," the official added.

"We also spoke with Professor Park Geun-hyung. It will take time for him to recover, and we will be able to greet you soon"

Born in 1935, Lee Soon-jae is one of the most revered actors in South Korea, with an acting career spanning over six decades on television, film, and stage.

His health has been an issue of public concern in recent years. In 2024, he stepped down from the play Waiting for Godot due to health reasons but was back in the limelight when he took home the grand prize at the 2024 KBS Entertainment Awards for Gaesoori.

Lee thanked his audience with a powerful presence on stage at the time.

He stated, "Actors should be evaluated solely on their acting. To the viewers who came here to encourage me, and to the viewers who are watching, I have been indebted to you and have received so much help throughout my life. Thank you."

In spite of that public outing, Lee's failure to attend the 37th Korea PD Awards in April this year rekindled fears about his health.

His agency's latest update is meant to lay those rumors to rest while affirming that he is still dedicated to recuperation.
