When newcomers Macklemore and Ryan Lewis took home and award for Rap Album of the Year at the 2014 Grammys, it took everyone by surprise.
Although the duo had seven nominations, Macklemore didn't foresee conquering the rap genre.
The Seattle group's album "The Heist" reign supreme over the work of Drake, Kanye West, Jay Z, and Kendrick Lamar.
According to the Los Angeles Times , the public was shocked that their debut album nabbed a Grammy over Lamar's "Good Kid, M.A.A.D City."
Macklemore happened to be quite astonished as well.
Following all his wins from the Grammys that he shared with his music partner Lewis, Macklemore took to Instagram to show his 3 million followers a friendly text message he sent to Lamar.
"You got robbed. I wanted you to win. You should have," he wrote. "It's weird and sucks that I robbed you. I was gonna say that during the speech. Then the music started playing during my speech, and I froze. Anyway, you know what it is. Congrats on this year and your music. Appreciate you as an artist and as a friend. Much love."
In the caption of the screenshot text message, Macklemore expressed that Lamar should've took home a Grammy for Best Rap Album.
"I'm honored and completely blown away to win anything much less 4 Grammys. But in that category, he should have won IMO,” he wrote. “And that's taking nothing away from The Heist. Just giving GKMC ['Good Kid, M.A.A.D City'] it's proper respect."
A response for Lamar has yet to be reported.
Macklemore and Lewis' hit single "Thrift Shop" also won for Best Rap Performance and Song.
