The Law Of Pleasures

It's a comedy since it's funny. No, it's a drama because it covers serious subject matter. Actually, "The Law of Pleasures," which stars talented Korean film actresses, Uhm Jung Hwa, Moon So Ri and Jo Min Soo is a bit of both. The film offers a lighthearted but thoughtful look at life's dramatic developments and the kind of friends that can help you cope with them.

Uhm Jong Hwa, a singer also known as the Madonna of Korea, is also making a name for herself as an actress. She has appeared in the films "Dancing Queen," "Singles" and "Princess Aurora."

Moon So Ri, who will also appear in the film "Manshin," has been in two-dozen films and a few dramas, her most recent drama being "Legend" in 2007.

Jo Min Soo last played Song Ju Sun in the drama "Goddess of Marriage." She has appeared in a dozen dramas and a few films, most recently playing the mom out for revenge in the film "Pieta."

"The Law of Pleasures" focuses on the relationships and career struggles of three 40-something women. The film's screenplay is the grand-prize-winner of a writing concert sponsored by Lotte Entertainment.
In the film Uhm Jung Hwa plays the TV producer Shin Hye. She's good at her job but romance complicates her work situation. Her character dated the chief of their TV network before he left her for a younger woman. Working together is awkward.

Moon So Ri plays her best friend Mi Yeon, a housewife in an unfulfilling marriage. Jo Min Soo plays Hae Young, a single mom with a grown daughter and a boyfriend. She would like her daughter to move out so that she can enjoy the next chapter of her life but her daughter seems reluctant to move.

Things slowly improve for everyone. Shin Hye finds a new boyfriend and he's younger than her, so that makes for great romantic revenge on her former boyfriend/ boss. Hae Young's daughter finally moves out, giving Hae Young more alone time with her boyfriend. But then Hae Young gets sick, changing the dynamic of her relationship. Mi Yeon's marriage suffers a crisis when she finds out that her husband was having an affair.

The film offers plenty of real mid-life drama of the kind that is rarely explored in films. And it does so in a way that stresses friendship and loyalty rather than the trials and struggles the three friends face.

"The Laws of Pleasure," also called "Venus Talk," will open in theaters on Feb. 13.
