Although the series finale of "How I Met Your Mother" was disliked by many, Neil Patrick Harris, a star of the show, happened to adore it.

Harris, who is now starring on Broadway, defended the last show of "How I Met Your Mother" while stopping by "The Late Show with David Letterman."

"It wasn't necessarily the happy ending that people were expecting," said the 40-year-old actor about Ted getting back with Robin years after his wife dies. "But Carter [Bays] and Craig [Thomas], who were once writers on our show and the executive producers and creators, knew this ending years ago and had played towards that. And I was a big proponent of it and a big fan of it.”

Harris also touched on Barney, the character he played on "How I Met Your Mother," getting a divorce from Robin.

"Sometimes, people's growth doesn't really mean that they grow up," said Harris. "There are certain people who you want them to get into a solid relationship and really settle down and learn from things. And you want Barney to be the guy you can bring your mom home to, but Barney's the guy who wants to bang your mom."

The perfect ending would've been for Ted to be with "the mother," however, Harris said, "At the end of the day, it's not always meant to be that way.

Currently you can find Harris dressed in drag in the Broadway play "Hedwig and the Angry Inch."
