Eva Green, recently in “300 Rise Of An Empire” stars in “Penny Dreadful” on Showtime with Josh Hartnett, Timothy Dalton, and Billie Piper.

“There is only one worthy goal for scientific exploration: Piercing the tissue that separates life from death,” says a young scientist in the first episode of Showtime's new drama, “Penny Dreadful.” The young man addresses Sir Malcolm Murray, an explorer who plunges into London's depths in search of his lost daughter.

Set in London in 1891, “Penny Dreadful” is about a pair of highly unconventional detectives, Sir Malcolm Murray (Timothy Dalton) and Vanessa Ives (Eva Green), who convince a nomadic sharpshooter named Ethan Chandler (Josh Hartnett) to join their hunt for vampires and other monsters. Billie Piper plays Irish immigrant Brona Croft, and Harry Treadaway plays the young scientist.

“Penny Dreadful” is a beguiling examination of that space between life and death and all of the characters, in one way or another, hope to “pierce the tissue.”

The title “Penny Dreadful” refers to the pulp magazines from that time period, which were filled with cheap yet enticingly illustrated tales of unlawful acts and paranormal occurrences, according to the Washington Post.

Eva Green can be seen next in Frank Miller’s “City: A Dame to Kill For,” an upcoming 2014 American crime thriller which will be the sequel to the 2005’s Sin City. The “Penny Dreadful” actress will play the part of Ava Lord, (a.k.a. the eponymous Dame to Kill For).

Director Robert Rodriguez and Miller said, “We’ve been wanting to tell this story for a very long time. Ava Lord is one of the most deadly and fascinating residents of Sin City. From the start, we knew that the actor would need to be able to embody the multifaceted characteristics of this femme fatale and we found that in Eva Green. We are ecstatic that Eva is joining us.”

Penny Dreadful premieres Sunday, May 11th at 10pm ET/PT on Showtime. Watch the trailer below!
