Which tablet device is worth the purchase? We compare the Kindle Fire HDX 8.9 against Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 to see which is better.

In terms of design and display, the Kindle Fire HDX 8.9 has an 8.9inches IPS LCD display with 16M colors and a resolution of 2560x1600pixels (339ppi). The 4G variant weighs 384 grams, while the WiFi variant is lighter, weighing 372 grams. Its dimensions are 231x158x7.8 mm and the display supports Multitouch.

The Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 has a display of 10.1 inches (PLS TFT) and a lower resolution of 800x1280pixels (149ppi). It’s available in white and silver shades and it comes along with an S pen stylus. Its dimensions are 262x180x8.9 mm and weighs 600 grams.

For the hardware and OS, the Kindle Fire HDX tablet supports 2G-3G-4G networks, microSIM, Bluetooth, GPRS, WLAN and microUSB. It’s powered by a quad core 2.2GHz Krait 400, which is backed by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 chipset and it uses an Adreno 330 GPU. It has three variants of unexpandable internal memories: 16/32/64GB and 2GB of RAM, and it runs on the Androidv 4.x (Jelly Bean-customized) OS.

Meanwhile, the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 supports only 2G and 3G and has only one MiniSIM port. It has a quad core 1.4GHz Cortex A9 processor, which teams up with an Exynos 4412 Quad chipset and a Mali-400MP4 GPU. It also hosts 2GB of RAM, but its 16 and 32GB variant of built in storage are expandable up to 64GB. Plus, it has another 64GB variant. It runs on the Android 4.0.3 (Ice Cream Sandwich), which was upgraded to the 4.4.2 (KitKat) version. The tablet also supports WiFi, GPRS, Bluetooth and has infrared ports.

For the battery and camera specs, the Kindle Fire HDX 8.9 has a non-removable Li-Ion battery whose capacity wasn’t revealed, but the company says that it lasts 12 hours when it’s used continuously.

The Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 also has a Li-Ion battery which is non removable, but its 7000mAh capacity allows users to talk for about 33 hours.

The Amazon tablet has a more advanced primary camera, with a resolution of 8MP and features such as 3264x 2448pixels, autofocus, LED flash, geo tagging, image stabilization, touch focus. The secondary camera is 1.2MP.

The Samsung tablet has a 5MP rear camera with 2592х1944pixels, autofocus, LED flash and geo tagging. The camera on the front is 1.9MP.

The Kindle Fire HDX 8.9 16GB variant costs $379 ($479 with 4G), the 32GB variant is at $379 and the 64GB variant costs $479. The Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 16GB variant cost $440 .
