A Scottish woman, Jessie Gallan, who just turned 109 on Jan. 2 shared that the secret to her longevity is to drink porridge every day, have a good work ethic and avoid men at all costs. How does this theory work?

In a birthday interview with STV News, Gallan said she has a hearty breakfast each day, and does her fair share of exercise. However, she adds that not getting married and passing up on men has also assisted her in living longer.

"My secret to a long life has been staying away from men. They're just more trouble than they're worth," Gallan said. "I also made sure that I got plenty of exercise, eat a nice warm bowl of porridge every morning and have never gotten married."

Gallan's caregiver says she has all her senses intact and is simply amazing. She also likes going to church on Sundays and listening to music. Scotland's oldest resident began working at the age of 13, and she does not remember taking holidays or vacations.

Gallan praised herself for her independence and discipline that she has carried throughout her life: "I've never had to depend on anybody," Gallan said. "But I'm fine."

Gallan became the oldest person in Scotland trailing Glasgow's Clare Dawson who passed away at the age of 109.
