Will This Be Won Bin's Comeback Year?

Is this the year that actor Won Bin makes a comeback? It has been five years since he appeared in a film and 13 years since he had a drama role. According to reports in the Korean media outlet, The Star, the 37-year-old actor has been discussing possible projects with more than one director. Reports say he currently has offers for several movies, including a period drama and an action film. But it's not the first time during his acting hiatus that he has considered and discussed a role.

His last role was in the film "Man From Nowhere," which swept the Korea Film Awards. The action thriller was Korea's highest grossing film in 2010. In that film he played a vengeful man who goes on a murderous rampage. He won several awards for that role.

After "Man From Nowhere" was released Won bin received many film offers in Korea. But he turned them down because he was in the running for a Hollywood film. Unfortunately the Hollywood film offer fell through.

Director Lee Chang Dong wanted Won Bin for one of his film projects along with popular Chinese actress Zhang Zi Yi. Won Bin was up for the role of a serial killer in that film but the production was cancelled.

The actor almost had a drama role in 2013 when he was up for a part in the melodrama "That Winter The Wind Blows." The drama's writer suggested him for the role of Song Hye Kyo's con man brother when the plot was first pitched. But differences between the actor and the production team ended those discussions.  And Jo In Sung got the role of the con man that pretends to be Song Hye Kyo's long-lost brother.

In a 2009 interview with My Daily he lamented his short but impressive acting resume.

"When looking at my career, I feel a bit sad that I don't have many films or diverse projects," he told My Daily. "Since I've taken long breaks after each film, each time I feel like I'm starting over as a rookie again. It feels like a new start. I do think I'd like to work more than I have in the past. I'm not the type of person who can work prolifically and when I'm deeply involved in one thing, I can't do something else."

His resume is not much longer now. If he does take a new role, it will be a lot like starting over.
