'Grey's Anatomy' Season 12 Spoilers: Izzie Returns After Derek's Death? Shonda Rhimes Says She Never Expected To Say Goodbye To Patrick Dempsey's Character

“Grey’s Anatomy” season 12 spoilers revealed that Katherine Heigl (Izzie) could be returning in the forthcoming episodes.

In an interview with TV Line, Katherine Heigl confirmed that she would not mind reprising her role as Izzie in "Grey's Anatomy."

"If they want me to return for an arc, I would love to know where Izzie is now. It's been a couple of years. I really hope she's succeeding somewhere," she said.

Unreality TV further pointed out that Izzie's comeback could perhaps appease fans who are still devastated over Patrick Dempsey's (Derek Shepherd) sudden termination. It was reported that show runner Shonda Rhimes was repeatedly attacked on Twitter by fans asking why she decided to fire one of the series' pioneer characters.

Shonda Rhimes recently released an official statement about the devastating twist that happened in season 11. It read:

"Derek Shepherd is and will always be an incredibly important character -- for Meredith, for me and for the fans."

"I absolutely never imagined saying goodbye to our 'McDreamy.' Patrick Dempsey's performance shaped Derek in a way that I know we both hope became a meaningful example -- happy, sad, romantic, painful and always true -- of what young women should demand from modern love. His loss will be felt by all. Now, Meredith and the entire Grey's Anatomy family are about to enter uncharted territory as we head into this new chapter of her life. The possibilities for what may come are endless. As Ellis Grey would say: the carousel never stops turning."

Meanwhile, ABC has also released its official statement explaining why Patrick Dempsey had to leave "Grey's Anatomy."

"After 11 seasons on Grey's Anatomy, Patrick Dempsey is moving on to pursue other interests. Dr. Derek Shepherd is an iconic character and we've been proud to be the home of 'McDreamy' and the 'Mer/Der' love story. The devotion of Grey's fans throughout the years has been a testament to the creative mind of Shonda Rhimes and Dempsey's talent. 'McDreamy' will be greatly missed and we wish Patrick the very best in his future endeavors."
