'Grey's Anatomy' Ellen Pompeo Leaves ABC Series After Season 12? Meredith Grey Dies Of Alzheimer's Disease?

"Grey's Anatomy" season 12 spoilers revealed that Ellen Pompeo could be following Patrick Dempsey's footsteps and was thinking of leaving the ABC series. Could this be the end for Meredith Grey?

According to "Grey's Anatomy" spoilers from Zap2It, Ellen Pompeo's character Meredith Grey could be exiting the show, following her battle with Alzheimer's disease.

"As the show heads into Season 12, it's time to ask is Meredith's greatest battle about to begin? If you look back, the writers of 'Grey's' have been preparing for Meredith to develop Alzheimer's for several seasons but have been particularly heavy-handed in Season 11," the site reported.

As previously reported, Ellen Pompeo's contract will end after "Grey's Anatomy" season 12. Although ABC president Paul Lee has been adamant in claiming that the following season will not be the last, it would not come as a surprise of Pompeo would not renew her contract. 

The website further reported that focusing on Meredith Grey's story would be a great way to send her character off. They even added that Pompeo could potentially win an Emmy if she played her character right.

"It's a dynamic arc for an actor to pull off and it would give Meredith a powerful storyline outside of losing Derek. She'd center the season as her own person and drive plot without tying herself to a new romantic interest. It's the kind of thing Emmys were made for."

When The Hollywood Reporter asked show creator Shonda Rhimes about the possibility of season 12 focusing on Meredith's Alzheimer disease, she simply said "No comment."

"For Meredith, this journey is really about her coming into her own as a surgeon, figuring out who she is and who she wants to be, standing on her own two feet and trying to be her own person for the first time without the support of Cristina (Sandra Oh) and without the support of Derek," she added.
