Microsoft Releases Windows 10 Fall Update; Brings OS Maturity, Enhancements And New Features

Microsoft Corporation released Thursday the first major update of its new Windows 10 operating system released late July. This November update code named "Threshold 2" to users is also called Fall Update, according to a post on Microsoft News.

The Windows 10 Fall Update is aimed to bring enhancements to stability and performance to the desktop OS. It comes along with the Windows Store for Business and Windows Update for Business - both are for business users.

Also with the update are several features like Start Menu changes. Start Menu is now capable of saving more items, from 500 to 2048 while resizing tiles and offers better context menu.

Digital assistant Cortana gets new capabilities. Cortana will inform users of coupons for online retail stores the user visits frequently.

The Edge browser now improves its security and performance. With tab preview, it now has the capability to hover over open tabs to preview what is on those websites. There is no need for the user to leave the page he is on.  Edge also syncs with Reading list items and Favorites across devices so the user can get back easily to them.

For touch-capable devices that support stylus, users can jot down with the digital pen for reminders. Previously, users had to type texts or do voice search to create reminders.

Microsoft likewise allows Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 users to directly upgrade to the new version. Available on Microsoft Development Network are the ISO images of the Windows 10 fall update.

The standalone ISO file from the MSDN channel are downloadable while regular Windows 10 cycle users can get the update through the Windows Update site.

According to its announcement on the Windows Blog, the company reaches its next milestone with the Windows 10 Fall Update, which brings them the confidence to recommend the OS deployment to whole organizations.

Terry Myerson, Windows and Devices Executive VP said in his post, the new platform has reached its maturity while bringing improvements in every aspect of the platform such as, thousands of partners who updated their apps and drivers for compatibility with the OS.

Windows 10 is now rolling out to Xbox One as well, and to select mobile phones.
