'Little Women': A Metaphorical Masterpiece That Transcends Generations

Based on Louisa May Alcott's classic novel of the same name, "Little Women" follows the story of three destitute sisters who dream of becoming rich one day.

But unlike the original work and its feature films in 1994 and 2019, the South Korean drama is more of an interpretation rather than a direct remake.

It is a compelling work driven by eloquent metaphors, rich dialogues and powerful women characters.

In the series, Kim Go Eun takes on the role of Oh In Joo, the eldest sister who works as an accountant. She dreams of escaping poverty to give her family a beautiful, nouveau life.

Oh In Kyung is the second child, a news reporter played by Nam Ji Hyun. Meanwhile, Park Ji Hu transforms into Oh In Hye, the youngest child who aspires to become an artist.

The drama does not only show the struggles of a poor family, but also highlights how oppressed women are in the workplace and the society.

Oh In Joo, in spite of her kindness, is treated like an outcast in her workplace for being poor and divorced. Her only companion is Jin Hwa Young (Choo Ja Hyun), a fellow outcast.

Second-born daughter On In Kyung also finds it hard to make a name for herself at work. Oh In Hye endures being the laughingstock of the prestigious arts school due to her financial incapacity.

In a male-dominated industry, "Little Women" writer Jung Seo Kyung wishes to broaden the horizons wherein strong and compelling female characters can flourish.

In addition to that, "Little Women" also centers around the importance of social rank in the country as it equates to power and influence.

The three sisters don't only confront their own battles but also find themselves in an incident where they collide with the powerful figures in the country, changing the trajectory of their lives.

The work is proof that a masterpiece can be made with the familiar ingredients such as the original work of Louisa May Alcott, and the final touches of screenwriter Jung Seo Kyung and director Kim Hee Won.

What Sets 'Little Women' Apart From Other Dramas?

While "Little Women" may seem like another typical K-Drama remake, the first two episodes of the drama prove that it's filled with tenacity and attitude, and it's something that should be reckoned with.

In particular, the drama boasts its richness from its set design, styling, props and even cinematography and camera effects.

In addition to that, the intriguing dialogue and visual metaphors also hook viewers to subscribe to the drama until the end.

One of the metaphors and symbolizations that viewers didn't miss is Oh In Joo's shoes. Growing up poor, she always wear her cheap stilettos that set her apart from her colleagues who don expensive red heels.

When Oh In Joo receives a pair of red pumps from her boss, it gives away the sign of a social advancement, raising anticipation.

Although the series doesn't include fairytale-like twists and concepts, "Little Women" is an impeccable drama that will be remembered for quite a long time.

With that said, catch "Little Women" with English subtitles on Netflix every Saturday and Sunday!
