Song Hye Kyo's "The Glory" is making noise as the drama reportedly depicted a real-life story of bullying and harassment.

On the show's December 30 broadcast, the Netflix series featured the young Moon Dong Eun, played by Jung Ji So, assaulted by her schoolmates. Her arms were burned by a hair iron, and was threatened that nobody will listen to her if she revealed the truth. Not even the police, teachers, and her parents will believe her.

After airing the episode, "The Glory" become a hot topic in various online communities.

While actors got praised for their amazing and realistic performances, other viewers expressed how stunned they are to see such a shocking scene.

Is 'The Glory' Based on True Events?

Helmed by Ahn Gil Ho and penned by the renowned screenwriter Kim Eun Sook, "The Glory" depicts the story of a revenge-driven woman named Moon Dong Eun, who was forced to give up her dream and drop out of school after being tormented by her bullies. Years later, she wants to seek her longtime revenge.

While the bullying scene moved several viewers with its shocking interpretation, some believe that it is based on real-life events.

In one outlet, an article titled "Real life 'The Glory'" sparked netizens' curiosity after the story showed a similarity in a true-to-life event that happened in 2020.

Per the outlet, a 22-year-old man was forcibly dragged into an empty lot, got tied up, and was drenched in gasoline. The victim, named Park, had firecrackers placed on his knees, which eventually exploded leaving him burned alive.

The victim reportedly complained about a hot and painful experience but the perpetrators told him to roll over. Despite calling the ambulance, Park had major burns over his body.

On the other hand, his mother slammed the authorities after the perpetrators were charged only with probation and were not compensated for medical expenses after the suspect said: "They had no money."

As for the writer of "The Glory," she explained that K-drama is based on the various experiences of victims.

'The Glory' Screenwriter Reveals Reason Behind Creating the Drama

During the press conference, screenwriter Kim Eun Sook said that Song Hye Kyo's new drama is very personal to her.

"I'm a parent with a daughter going into 11th grade the day after tomorrow. School violence is a topic that hits close to home for me," she explained, as obtained by a media outlet.

Moroever, the writer based the story on her extensive research on school violence and even interviewed various victims.

The thing that she learned about the drama is that the victims all wanted a sincere apology from their perpetrators.
