"Monsters University" Oscars snub marks the second time Pixar is not nominated in any category in the Academy Awards!

Pixar's animated movie "Cars 2" was passed over in 2011. While "Monsters University" did not receive the same sort of critical praise that is often given to Pixar movies, "Monsters University" proved popular at the box office, where it has taken in $744 million worldwide.

According to The Hollywood reporter, Pixar has a remarkably successful track record in this category, having won seven times, for "Finding Nemo", "The Incredibles", "Ratatouille", "Wall-E", "Up", "Toy Story 3" and "Brave". "Monsters University" is a prequel to "Monsters, Inc.", which was nominated in 2002. DreamWorks Animation's Shrek won the Oscar that year.

"Monsters University's" Oscars snub also means that for the first time, Pixar will now go two straight years without a nomination in any category. This does not mean that Pixas is losing their touch though, the two-year oscar drought happened because its upcoming "The Good Dinosaur" film has been pushed from a summer 2014 release to November 25, 2015, leaving the studio without a 2014 release.

However, Pixar's sister company, Walt Disney Feature Animation, remains in the Oscar race, having earned a nomination for the critically acclaimed animated movie "Frozen".

"Frozen" is joined in this year's competition by DreamWorks Animation's "The Croods", Illumination Entertainment's" Despicable Me 2", Hayao Miyazaki's "The Wind Rises", and "Ernest and Celestine", which according to the Hollywood reporter is "a well-regarded French-Belgian movie that previously won several honors, including the Cristal Award for best picture at the Annecy International Animated Film Festival and France's Cesar Award for best animated film."

Disney is distributing "The Wind Rises" in the U.S., while "Ernest and Celestine" is being released by GKids Films.

Even though "Monsters University" oscars snub is an emotional blow for Pixar, financially "Monsters University" is a financial success earning $268,492,764 in North America, and $475,066,843 internationally, summing up to a worldwide total of $743,559,607. It is the fifty-fourth highest-grossing film and the fourth highest-grossing film of 2013.
