A Colorado woman was indicted in the kidnapping of a newborn.

The woman's name is Kristen Smith. According to ABC News, she was indicted on Wednesday on federal charges alleging that she kidnapped her half-sister's newborn from Wisconsin and left him behind at an Iowa gas station in sub-zero degree weather.

The FBI had filed a criminal complaint accusing Smith, half-sister of Brianna Marshall, of kidnapping newborn Kayden Powell on February 6.

31-year-old smith has been jailed in Iowa since her arrest.

Smith reportedly took the baby from a Town of Beloit, Wis. where her 18-year-old half sister was staying after giving birth on February 1.

Marshall woke up in the middle of the night to find that her son and Smith were missing and called 911.

The newborn, Kayden Powell, was found 29 hours later behind a gas station in freezing weather, wrapped in blankets inside a plastic storage bin.

Medical professionals were reportedly amazed by the fact that little Kayden survived.

Although "the investigation is ongoing," it's suspected that Smith kidnapped the newborn as an act of jealousy towards her younger half sister.

It was reported that investigators found e-mail and Facebook messages in which Smith falsely claims to have been pregnant or given birth.

A prosthetic pregnancy belly was also found in her car.

Smith, who also goes by the name Kristen Pearson, has also faced several other fraud and theft charges, including in Wisconsin, Indiana and Texas.

Defense attorney Victoria Noel told reporters that Smith "understands her sister has gone through an ordeal and is hoping she's doing all right, regardless of what may or may not have happened."
