Samsung Unrolls Tizen OS On Its Wearables; Ready to Compete with Android & iOS

Samsung unveiled its wearables Gear 2 and Gear 2 Neo with the Tizen OS running on them.

Tizen is a Linux-based operating system that is gradually being unrolled by Samsung in what seems to be an attempt to compete with Google's Android and Apple's iOS.

The Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2014 held in Barcelona, Spain displayed the latest mobile phones and other sleek, portable devices last Feb 24-27.

Samsung's booth demonstrated the power of the Tizen-enabled wearables.

When the Galaxy Gear was first introduced back in September 2013 in Berlin, Germany, the device was still running on Android. Just about 6 months after, it's back with an improved performance due to Tizen.

The shift in OS helped in boosting the battery life of Gear 2 & Gear 2 Neo. Now, it can last up to 3 days without charging, even 6 days with low usage.

According to Samsung's website, "it's the perfect choice for those who prefer an accessory that is a little more discreet and subtle."

Other features include:

  • 1.63-inch Super AMOLED screen display (320x320 pixels)
  • 1 GHz dual core processor
  • Bluetooth connectivity
  • 512 MB RAM & 4GB internal storage
  • 2-megapixel camera (for the Gear 2)

The two wrist gadgets aren't the first Tizen-running Samsung devices. The NX300M smart camera released in October 2013 already carried Tizen inside.

Samsung Gear 2, Gear 2 Neo, including Gear Fit, are now available for pre-order through Amazon and shipping will start on April 11.
