The Captain America spin off is officially confirmed to air in ABC. The straight-to-series episodes will revolve around Agent Carter (played by Hayley Atwell), a woman coming to grips with the superhero's supposed demise.

The plot for the series follows through from the first Captain America movie; after sacrificing his life and ending up frozen in the Arctic ice, Agent Carter is forced to move on, with a dull desk job, and without Steve Rogers. She is then tasked to co-lead the covert SHIELD organization and lead a double life.

The teaser trailer to the series was included in the Iron Man 3 DVD, and is meant to bridge the season gaps of another Marvel spin off, "Agents of SHIELD" (which has been renewed for another run). The producers intend to integrate both series, as well as tie these into future film licenses.

The script for the pilot season was completed four months ago, after the short film "Marvel One-Shot: Agent Carter" received positive reviews. The success of "Captain America: The First Avenger" and "The Winter Soldier" sealed the deal (deadline.com).

Agent Carter is part of Marvel's continuing efforts to create a multiverse outside the graphic novels, with movie and TV franchises, and webisodes. It has a running partnership with Netflix to produce more spin offs, including the Daredevil, Iron Fist, and Luke Cage characters.

The Captain America spin off starts a wave of shows based on characters co-existing in Hell's Kitchen, New York, but Marvel's long-term plans involve a roster of 8,000 characters. The company's sights faces forward, extending to 2028 (theguardian.com).

In related news, Hayley Atwell is currently involved in projects outside the Captain America spin off. Aside from playing Peggy Carter, she's also set to take on the role of Cinderella's mother in a new film adaptation. She'll also play the part of Vera Brittain in "Testament of Youth," based on the famous World War I memoirs.
