Glam rocker Gary Glitter has been arrestd as he faces eight sex charges against two teenage girls aged 12 to 14 three decades ago.

The Guardian reports that the 70-year-old pop star Gary Glitter was charged with six counts of indecent assault, one count of administering drug to facilitate sexual intercourse, and another count for sexual intercourse with a 13-year-old girl.

British glam rocker Gary Glitter has been popular in the 1970s with his great hits like "I'm the Leader of the Gang," "I Love You Love Me Love" and "Rock 'n' Roll" for which he sold almost 18 million records. He is known for his glitzy clothes and unique performing style.

The Crown Prosecution Service said that Gary Glitter, with real name Paul Gadd, committed the offence to the two girls between 1977 and 1980.

Baljit Ubhey, chief crown prosecutor for CPS London, said that they have carefully gathered over the evidence pertaining to the allegations of sexual offences.

He added, "Having completed our review, we have concluded, in accordance with the code for crown prosecutors, that there is sufficient evidence and it is in the public interest for Mr. Gadd to be charged with eight offences under the Sexual Offences Act 1956. These relate to two female complainants aged between 12 and 14 at the time of the alleged offending between 1977 and 1980."

Gary Glitter is set to appear in court on June 19.

It can be recalled that Glitter had a history of sex charges under his name.

He was jailed for four month in 1999 for possessing child pornography and was also convicted with sex offences against teenage girls in Vietnam for three years. He was then deported to England.

CNN also reports that another British pop culture singer was charged with sex raps in the past years. Jimmy Saville allegedly abused women in their teenage years before coming to authorities in 2012, a year after the disc jockey and television personality died. He was 84.
