'Modern Family's' Sara Hyland and boyfriend break up after five years together, a source confirmed to US Weekly last Tuesday.
"It didn't work out," the insider said regarding the split. "She's young. They decided they would be better off as friends."
The news comes after Hyland arrived without Matt Prokop at the MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday and The Emmys on Monday.
The source also confirmed that the 23-year-old actress is doing just fine, despite the circumstances. Hyland has even been updating fans about her enthusiasm for Modern Family's fifth Best Comedy Series win through Instagram.
Hyland and Matt Prokop met in 2008 when they both auditioned for 'High School Musical 3: Senior Year.' After becoming official five years ago, they moved in together and even adopted a dog named Barkley Bixby.
News of Modern Family's Sarah Hyland and her boyfriend's breakup came as a shock to fans since the couple had always been very vocal about their affection for each other.
According to People, the 24-year-old actor was the one who helped Hyland during her kidney surgery due to complications from kidney dysplasia in 2012.
Hyland told Seventeen magazine that Prokop was the one who helped her with her medicine and who brought her to doctor's appointments.
"Any other 21-year-old guy would not be there, I guarantee it," she said. "I am one of the luckiest people in the world to have him be there for me."
Prokop's dedication to the 'Vampire Academy' actress didn't stop there. When a fan sexually harassed the actress during the show's trip to Australia last February, Prokop took to Twitter to shockingly express his anger at what happened.
Hollywood Life reports that the enraged Prokop even went as far as hiring bodyguards for his girlfriend to protect her during filming for the Emmy Award winning show.
The ex-lovers certainly have a long history together. Will they really be able to remain friendly despite breaking up?
