The news is out: Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson will be taking on the role of Black Adam in "Shazam" movie after playing demi-god "Hercules."

The hunky "Hercules" lead actor shifts gears by playing the badass villain's role this time. This is where all his taunting ends. Prior to confirming his role, The Rock has been dropping hints and trolling his fans, leaving them to wonder whether he would be playing  Black Adam in "Shazam" movie or Shazam himself.

Forbes even included him in its list of possible choices for the role of Shazam, citing his popularity with family flicks like "The Tooth Fairy" and "Journey 2: The Mysterious Island" as the main factor behind his being a strong contender.

But the guessing game has grounded to a halt early on. Screenrant relayed the Variety report, confirming the identity of the writer who will pen the screenplay of "Shazam": Darren Lemke. The producers from Warner Bros. have recently hired him for the job, and observers speculate that shooting will start right away as soon as he is done with the script.

The Rock's portrayal of Black Adam in "Shazam" movie may have disappointed some of his fans who are looking forward to his taking the titular role. But as Screenrant put it, the "Hercules" actor gets to broaden his range as a performer, while sharpening his acting chops in the process if he takes on the villain's role.

According to i09, Warner Bros. envisions a "Shazam" movie so unlike the other DC films they have made. The film outfit has merged with New Line, making it their subsidiary. And it will be New Line that would take charge of creating the said flick.

With The Rock being cast as Black Adam, observers may note that this could be the first move in concretizing the unique tone the producers have visualized for the movie. In his interview with Entertainment Weekly, Toby Emmerich, president of New Line, emphasized that "Shazam" will have its own unique tone and feeling that set it apart from other superhero films.

As to whether or not Dwayne's taking on the villain's role has anything to do with that, fans will find out eventually once the movie hits cinemas.
