"Mad Men" star Jon Hamm and "Friends With Kids" actress Jennifer Westfeldt have a classic story of making it in Hollywood. The couple have shared an 18 year relationship. According to People, Westfeldt, 45, had looked out for the actor, 44, who enjoyed a party lifestyle and had 'taken care of him.

They officially announced their split up on Monday that they were ending their relationship after 18 years. According to People, Jennifer had been more like a manager or a mother to Jon in recent years rather than a girlfriend. She was seen as keeping a tight leash on Hamm but would also support him during difficult times.

Hamm was reportedly recovering from alcohol abuse and had been sober for quite some time. Newly published reports said  two things drove Jon Hamm and Jennifer Westfeldt apart: The Mad Men star got sober and he wanted kids.

There had been rumors earlier of their possible break up or a rift in their relationship. However, the couple had denied any such rumors earlier by issuing a joint statement "recounting their love for each other and promising to remain positive factor in each other's lives," said Music Times.

The couple had started dating in 1997 when he used to direct and produce. Although never tying the knot, both had stood by each other during the journey of their growth in Hollywood. Hamm even credit his long-time love to Jennifer for standing by him during his rehab journey. They were seen on the big screen together in films like Kissing Jessica Stein and Ira & Abbey. There had been speculations of the duo doing more projects together in future. They were last seen on July 22 at the New York premiere of Hamm's most recent project, the Netflix series, "Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp."
